Kaspar O. Samuelsen

Kaspar Oppen Samuelsen’s work drives impressions from many different sources. It is both rich in references to cinema, art and theatre underlying the performative nature of life.

With his etching series Rid videre! (Ride On!) Oppen Samuelsen makes a reference to his earlier work Rytterknas while drawing parallels to other art historical figures of horse riders.

The five equestrian portraits bring to mind the artistic tradition of depicting high status sitters such as the world famous portraits by Velàzques of the Spanish royal family. However Oppen Samuelsen doesn’t pursue the objective of communicating dynastic continuity and power, on the contrary he glorifies the ridiculous, preferring the world of fantasy to the realms of 21st century.

The artist recuperates the figure of a knight to create a realm where one could both dream and laugh again. Those horse riders acquire a meaning in a world where they appear irrelevant and outdated. Oppen Samuelsen’s artistically eloquent play with the imagination is an invitation to see not only the tragic but also the comic in life.
